I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where I teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. During my time at UCT I have been the recipient of various awards and commendations, including UCT’s Socially Responsive Course Development Grant in 2021, the Erasmus Mobility Grant in 2022 (to teach in Spain) and Yonsei University’s Frontier Programme Outstanding Scholar 2024.
To me, a key facet of my role at UCT has been promoting dialogue among students who are grappling with their own histories of abusive pasts and guiding them in the production of academically rigorous research.
Between 2022 and 2024 I led a project, under the Education, Justice and Memory Network (EDJAM), which explored innovative ways to teach and learn about violent histories. Working with educators, activists and civil society organisations in the arts, education and heritage field we examined the ways education around abusive pasts can foster more just futures. This project has been instrumental in my own thinking about curriculum transformation, and how to develop creative and impactful pedagogical approaches. The tools my project developed - including cartoons and podcasts - form a critical part of my teaching.
Collaboration and professional development are key aspects of my teaching practice. Since 2022 I have taken a leading role in the creation of several short courses, through the Judicial Institute for Africa (JIFA), with a focus on education in Social Justice for civil society activists.
I also assisted the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) with curriculum advice and support in the development of the Justice and Transformation Programme at the University of Tirana, Albania.
